Goodbye Lincoln Fabrics

I have a lot of sewing to write about, the wetsuit is fixed, Mr. McCall's shirt is done, I finished a dress for my sister and I attended a sewing conference, but today I want to say a little goodbye to a local fabric shop, Lincoln Fabrics.

Lincoln Fabrics is in Venice, California, and survived as a family owned and run business for 54 years.  It's closing it's doors for good tomorrow.
Notions and Checkout Counter

The lady that runs it is retiring and they are going to rent out the building for another use.
Upstairs - wools, fleeces, knits
I haven't been sewing (and therefore fabric-buying) all that long, so I can't say I'm a longtime customer, but my weekend circuit of Lincoln Fabrics, Fabric Planet and Joann will be missing a key element after it closes it's doors.
Linens and Denims
I got very fond of Lincoln Fabrics, perhaps partially because the slightly warehouse feel of the place reminds me of my Dad's business.

Trims and belting
It's not a place to really get bargins, but it's a fantastic place to hunt around for unusual fabrics and trims at very fair prices.  They have an amazingly varied stock, and some of the bolts look like they've been there for most of the 54 years!

High quality leather hides
Buttons!
More buttons!
Still more buttons!

And I have enjoyed rifling through their crazy stack of old (but not that old) patterns.  There's a few really good ones in there:

Gimme that Dynasty pattern - I must have it!!
I hope something half as wonderful shows up in the building in the coming months.

Farewell Lincoln Fabrics.

  1. Nooooo I haven't been there in ages, but this still makes me sad. I've found (but not purchased) some amazing things there before. Any idea what's happened to their inventory?

Also, I totally make the Joann's-Fabric Planet loop, but usually by the time I've hit FP I don't have the energy/budget for LF anymore.

  2. If I lived nearby I would definitely shop there weekly. Bye Lincoln Fabric. I'm glad I was able to visit it with you.
